The figure illustrates a template for parenteral formulation development process which considers many of the essential factors necessary for the formulation design and lists various formulation supporting studies that are needed from patient use, manufacturing, and marketability point of view.
These studies are not mutually independent. As formulation scientists, we understand that an optimum formula not only must address stability/solubility issues, but it also must keep in mind patient’s acceptability/tolerance. We also understand that the formulation must be economically feasible and should address the issues that might pose difficulties or constraints from the manufacturing and/or marketing point of view.
